The Autonomous Soiling Detector on Photovoltaic Panels, developed by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has achieved tangible improvement for PV system performance. Prototype tests at DEWA’s head office parking showed the detector’s effectiveness in reducing losses caused by dust accumulation by 10%, in addition to lowering cleaning and maintenance costs. The device has been granted a patent from the GCC Patent Office and from Canada, Jordan, India, Australia, Japan and Spain.
The device analyses solar radiation and compares actual production from the solar panels with the expected ideal production under defined conditions. This enables rapid detection of drops in efficiency and quantifies the impact of soiling, allowing timely cleaning or adjustments to optimise performance.
The system provides a practical model that supports the operational efficiency of solar panels by automatically monitoring performance and accurately identifying maintenance requirements. Operational trials have shown a reduction in maintenance and an improvement in scheduled cleaning events based on precise, timely data. These results reflect the capability of DEWA’s teams to develop innovative solutions that enhance solar PV system efficiency.
