DP World Announces US$ 500,000 Investment to Expand Abuja Eye Hospital in Nigeria

DP World today announced the continuation and expansion of its long-standing partnership with the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation (TCF), confirming a new investment of US$500,000 to support the extension of the TCF Eye Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria, bringing its total cumulative investment in the project to US$1.5 million.

The investment marks a significant milestone in DP World’s commitment to creating meaningful and sustainable impact in the communities where it operates. Since the beginning of the partnership in 2019, DP World and TCF have worked together to combat avoidable blindness, a major public health challenge affecting thousands of Nigerians each year.

Mohammed Akoojee, CEO & Managing Director, DP World Africa, said: “Access to quality eye care is not only a health priority, it is a social and economic imperative. Through our partnership with the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation, DP World is committed to restoring sight, dignity and opportunity for thousands of individuals and families across Nigeria. The impact achieved at the Abuja Eye Hospital demonstrates what is possible when purpose driven organizations collaborate to deliver sustainable, long-term change.”

This collaboration is delivered under TCF’s Mission for Vision programme, through which DP World partners with the Foundation to ensure the provision of high quality, affordable eye care services for underserved and vulnerable populations. The TCF Eye Hospital in Kukwaba, Abuja, offers comprehensive services including cataract and glaucoma surgeries, pediatric ophthalmology, low vision care, and extensive community outreach programmes. A cornerstone of the hospital’s operating model is its cross-subsidy approach, whereby revenue from paying patients supports free treatment for those unable to afford care, ensuring both equity and long-term sustainability.

Since the launch of the partnership, the results have been transformative:

60,000 eye operations carried out at the Abuja Eye Hospital since 2019, 63% of which were provided free of charge

Extensive outreach programmes within a 100 kilometers radius of Abuja, offering free screening, transportation, surgery, medication, and post-operative care

Supported by DP World’s new USD 500,000 investment, the TCF Eye Hospital will undergo significant expansion, which includes increasing bed capacity from 82 to 160. In due course of time, a training institute dedicated to developing local ophthalmic and paramedical professionals is also being planned.

This next phase will enhance the hospital’s ability not only to treat a growing number of patients, but also to build long term national capacity in eye care delivery.

Jagdish M. Chanrai, Chairman of the Tulsi Chanrai Foundation, said: “Our vision has always been to eliminate preventable blindness by ensuring that quality eye care is accessible to all, regardless of economic circumstance. DP World’s continued support enables us to scale our impact, strengthen local capabilities, and reach more communities with sustainable eye care solutions. Together, we are building a model that restores sight today while securing better healthcare outcomes for the future.”

In Nigeria, DP World operates across logistics, market access services and freight forwarding contributing an estimated US$ 6 billion to the economy in FY2022–FY2023, as quantified in independent analysis by Accenture.
